The State is my Shepherd

The State is my shepherd;

I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green stockyards;

He leads me beside steel water troughs;

He restores my security.

He leads me in paths of subjugation for the common good.

Yea, though we walk through the valley which echoes of liberty,

We will fear no failure;

For the State has our communal back;

Its chains and its bonds, they hold us fast.

We prepare a table for our masters in the presence of their enmity,

and they allow our heads to remain intact;

Our collective cup is somewhere near half-full.

Surely safety and serfdom shall follow us all the days of our lives,

And we will dwell in the cells of Utopia forever.

  1. Reminded me of a similar one in high school in the late ’80s by a Ugandan writer, Laban Erapu I think in a poem collection East African Poems by Jonathan Kariara. Ever so relevant even today…..
